Here is a story Paul Washer told at one of our conferences:
"One time, when I was a young man, I came back from Peru. I was asked to speak at a church, and they set up microphones in the aisle ways and people came to ask questions of the missionary.
I’ll never forget this little red-headed boy. He was as red-headed as he could be, and freckles all over his face. He walks up to the microphone. He’s standing on his tiptoes. They had to lower it.
He started: “Mr. Washer?”
I said, “Yep.”
He said, “When you win everybody to Jesus in Peru, then what are you going to do?”
Everybody laughed except him and me. I said, “Well, when I win everybody to Christ in Peru, I guess I have to go find another place to work.”
He said, “Yeah, that’s what I thought too.”
Why not? I don’t see anything in the Bible that tells me it can’t happen. Young person, you listen to me. You let only one person limit you – God.
We have raised up men, who, oftentimes in the name of the providence of God, are narrow-minded, little men with tight spirits and tiny hearts. We need men of breath. We need men of heart. We need men and women who will believe their God for great things.
Sometimes, when I’m on my knees and I cry out, “Oh God, what do you want to do now?” It seems in my heart that over and over I hear a singular answer: “What can you believe me for? What do you want to do? Do you think you’ve outrun my ability to deliver? Do you think you’ve reached my greatness, you little man? Stand up, walk outside, count the stars if you can. I know them by name! What do I want to do? What can you believe me for?”
God loves the boldness of a man who reveres Him, and trembles at His name, and yet will fight Him for the sake of Jerusalem – that will grab a hold of the horns of the altar. He loves that man who will say, “I will not let you go until you bless me! You will find no rest from me, until you have made Jerusalem a praise, and the Church, a beauty."

The believers only hope and greatest joy: In Christ alone

A foundational truth of biblical Christianity is that the believer has a right standing before God in the gospel-in Christ alone.  The psalms of David confront us with man's greatest dilemma: "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?  Or who may stand in His holy place?  He who has clean hands and a pure heart who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, nor sworn deceitfully."  Any man who entertains even the remotest possibility that there is a personal and moral God must tremble at David's question.  Unless he is an imbecile or his conscience has been seared beyond use, he must recognize that he does not possess the necessary qualifications to stand approved before the Judge of all the earth.  The Scriptures tell us that if he looks within, he will find that his heart is more deceitful than all else and is wicked beyond comprehension.  If he turns to consider his own mind, he will find that there are wicked thoughts lodged within.  If he listens intently to  his speech, he will become aware that it is full of deceit, cursing, and bitterness.  If he gazes upon his hands, he will see that they are stained with the residue of countless misdeeds.  If in desperation he seeks to cover his shame by dressing himself in his most righteous deeds, he will find that he is clothed in the filthy rot of  a leper.  Although he washes himself with lye and uses much soap, the stain of his iniquity remains.  Everywhere he turns, he finds himself accused, condemned, and without hope.  It is in this moment of absolute helplessness and final resignation that the illumined and regenerate sinner looks to Christ and finds his hope in Him.  Turning from self-righteousness, he believes and is justified by grace alone through faith alone.  From that moment on, he bears the twin marks of a Christian: he glories in Christ Jesus and puts no confidence in the flesh.  He has entered into that great company of saints who believed God and it was reckoned to them as righteousness.  He has cast himself upon Christ and clings to Him with a strength multiplied by the terror of what would have befallen him if he had been left to fend for himself.  He stands upon Christ alone and will not venture from Him.  He is convinced that he can ascend into the hill of the Lord and stand in His holy place only by virtue of the person and merit of Christ.  To paraphrase the old hymn writer: "His hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness.  He dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.  On Christ the solid Rock he stands, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand."

Sufficiency of Scripture Conference (free download)

Several years ago, we had the blessing of attending this conference.  It has probably been the most influential conference our family has ever participated in.   This was the conference that we first heard Paul Washer speak.  God used that vessel to help us understand the gospel in a much deeper way. It changed the way that we would parent our younger children in regard to seeking to lead them to Christ.  For the first time in our Christian walk, we understood relying and depending on the Spirit of God to do what we could not truly do ourselves.  How can a dead man do anything?  We as parents, as much as we love our children, do not have the ability either to give life to them. 

This past weekend, we had the privilege of  spending two days with several other families that challenged and refreshed our souls.  It is so good to be with brothers and sisters in the Lord!   We are still talking, gleaning and praying over things from this weekend.  As several shared how God had worked in their lives to bring them to Him, we were challenged to pray over  several people that we know that are still relying on the strength of their flesh to walk out the Christian life.  As we were praying this morning, the Lord brought this conference to mind and particularly one of the messages by Paul Washer; The Sufficiency of Scripture and the Gospel.  

How excited I was to find that the whole conference can now be downloaded for free.  There are literally hours of spiritual encouragement here.  They all are worth listening to, but if you can only listen to one, make it The Sufficiency of the Scripture and the Gospel by Paul Washer.
